Example text

An adolescent’s selfconcept is just beginning to take shape and is still somewhat unstable, so therapists can guide their clients in the exploration of possibilities and impossibilities, being both a model and a parental figure as well as a ‘congruent and transparent other’ (Geertjens and Waaldijk, 1998: 159). However, active directiveness may not be appropriate. If adolescent clients resent the often high level of adult intrusion that they experience in their lives, they may withdraw into silence or uncooperativeness as their only way of maintaining a sense of personal integrity (Mabey and Sorensen, 1995).

This is complicated by the ‘concealed’ or ‘hidden’ nature of many socially constructed definitions of age-appropriate behaviour, such that clients may experience such norms as ‘natural’ (that is, universal and inborn), seeing discrepancy between these norms and their own achievements as personal failings. Counsellors can explore with clients the boundaries between what is and is not changeable, and the extent to which age norms and expectations need not be as restrictive as they might at first appear.

To underscore the relevance of developmental tasks and themes to the lives of counsellors as well as to their clients, the spotlight turns in the following section, as in several of the Activity Trail exercises, to the counsellor rather than the client, and considers the process of becoming and being a counsellor as a long-term life course issue rather than a point-in-time decision. Stages in counsellors’ professional development The route into becoming a counsellor or psychotherapist is generally circuitous (Norcross and Guy, 1989), and counselling cannot be a profession that is entered into lightly, or without thought.
