Decommissioning of a reactor may be aided at certain stages by partial or total decontamination. Decontamination may be applied to internal or external surfaces of components and systems, structural surfaces and the tools employed in decommissioning.

After each phase of decommissioning, the operating organization should report to the regulatory authority detailing the disposal of the waste generated during the period. The report should also provide the current state of the installation or site and identify any anomalies observed during the phase. Moreover, information such as radiological surveys and personnel monitoring data should be reported to the regulatory body, as required. At the completion of decommissioning, a final decommissioning report including all elements of traceability should be prepared.
