Example text

For the first hour to an hour and a half, we did intensive Kundalini yoga as a group to generate a strong flow of pranic energy within each of us. After that, we chanted collectively for an hour to raise the vibrations in the room until Yogi Bhajan discerned (from a distance) that the energy was sufficient for him to enter and conduct the White Tantric yoga. Before actually initiating the process, he lectured for about forty-five minutes about some esoteric aspect of spiritual growth and healing. The topics were always different and quite obtuse.

Over the many years that I engaged in this group practice, no single exercise was ever repeated, which always impressed me—it was always new, always unique, and always in the moment. We held these various positions for up to forty-five or sixty minutes. Sometimes we chanted, sometimes we internally meditated, and sometimes we did a certain kind of pranayama, or breathing exercise. While directing us to hold these positions and keep our spines perfectly straight, he would be channeling pranic energy through the field of this energetic battery of male and female polarities, so that the energy moved back and forth—zigzagging, he called it—as it continued to build in intensity.

I trained with Stephen Gilligan, Stephen and Carol Lankton, and Jeffrey Zeig. I spent about three years studying different ways of working with hypnotic language patterns and began integrating this into my private practice. I was very excited about the powerful changes that the unconscious mind was capable of generating. Clients were achieving amazing results in all kinds of problem areas. At a certain point, however, I began to realize that even though I did quite a good job at putting people into trance and helping them achieve a positive therapeutic outcome, I was doing all the work!
