The urge to see her was overwhelming. He couldn't believe such a lively child could be in such serious condition, and so quickly. He glanced at his brother, judging Royal's panic against his own. " "Just pray," Royal said, and dropped into a chair. He stared at the floor, gathering the guts to say aloud what he'd been thinking for hours. His voice was shaking when he began to speak. "She's pretty sick. Her fever keeps spiking. " Roman shook his head and slid into the chair beside his brother. "I have never been this scared in my entire life," he muttered.
He sighed. " Before Roman could answer, Maddie burst into the room. " "I don't think so," Royal said. " Maddie rolled her eyes and started to pout, but Royal sidetracked her by holding up the drawings. "I thought we'd talked about this," he said gruffly. Although she didn't understand why, she knew she was in trouble. She gave her uncle Roman an accusing stare and then dropped her chin. Roman sighed. In Maddie's eyes, he'd let her down. Royal laid a hand on Maddie's head. "Madeline Michelle, I'm talking to you," he said.
Maddie, there was no lady on your bed and there isn't going to be an angel coming. " She nodded, but he could tell she wasn't buying his explanation. "What you saw … what you thought you saw, that was all part of your illness. " Her lower lip protruded. "I saw a lady," she said shortly, and turned away, pretending great interest in the kitten with one blue eye and one brown eye. " In spite of the fact that his talk had gone nowhere, he had to grin. " Royal rocked on his heels and grinned. "Marbles it is," he said softly.
