It all began in the late nineteenth century when some representatives of the Finnish Salvation Army made an attempt to bring the Romani people into an active Christian faith. Like other Finnish immigrants, they came to find jobs and to try their chances of building a decent life on the other side of the Baltic Sea. In Sweden, the authorities’ attitude towards the Roma was largely parallel to that of Finland. The solution to these problems, therefore, was believed to be found in an assimilation of Romani people through schooling and lodging.
