The “severe internal struggles” over castration, to which Freud refers, trigger an elaborate structure through which the boy disavows what he, nonetheless, “knows” he saw. In his analysis of Little Hans, the “decisive [case] in Freud’s discovery of the castration complex,” Freud tells us that after Hans sees his younger sister Hanna being given a bath, Hans’ father tells him that “his sister has not got a widdler like him” (Laplanche and Pontalis 56; Freud 31). In these all-important words (a paternal confirmation of a child’s most pressing concern), an ambiguity arises: Is Hans’ father telling him that his sister’s widdler is unlike Hans’ own widdler, or is he making the more extreme assertion that his sister, unlike Hans, has not got a widdler at all?

The out-of-place 28 Feminine Look quality of this vase has subsequently captured the attention of many observers.

The effects of the unconscious have no basis without this bar” (Lacan Encore 18, 34). This bar, Lacan then remarks, “is not unrelated to the phallus,” which, in turn, marks the subject’s entry into language (39).
