Welds were made on a custom designed "hot" anvil consisting of a shallow steel box (12"W x 12"L x 2"H) with 1" thick walls containing a heating element. The hot anvil was monitored by thermocouple and maintained at 200 °C. The hot anvil was used to slow the cooling rate of the welds and avoid cracking of the cast iron plates. An Ameritherm 20 kW induction heating system was used to preheat the material with two induction coils. Coil 1 was a flat coil placed ahead of the FSW pin tool. Coil 2 was a spiral design placed around the pin tool.
