Most of the evidence is stratigraphic in nature, meaning that deposits of sediment (or other material) laid down during the time span of interest are sampled and investigated for clues as to the characteristics of the environment at the time of deposition. If deposition occurred continuously over a fairly long period of time, then the result is a stratigraphic sequence in which changes in the characteristics of the deposit through the sequence are used to infer changes in the environment through time.

Tree rings were also particularly large, indicating rapid growth in response to high temperatures (Creber and Chaloner 1985). The climatic deterioration at the end of the Eocene, which appears abrupt (Buchardt 1978) or gentle (Collinson et al. 1981), according to the type of evidence used, created a different climatic regime in the Oligocene. Then the climate of Britain was more comparable to that of a region like the southeastern United States, though there may have been very dry intervals, as indicated by the presence of gypsum evaporite crusts and ancient desert dunes in the Ludien and Stampian sediments from the Paris Basin.

Taphonomy relates to the problem of provenance described previously in that it is not always easy to 23 24 Chapter 1 A Framework for Understanding Environmental Change determine whether a fossil organism lived where it is found (being in situ) or if it was transported from elsewhere before burial. The taphonomy of a fossil assemblage also refers to the conditions which led to preservation, and it is important to be aware that different environmental conditions will influence the extent to which different kinds of organisms are preserved and hence their representation within the assemblage.
