I remembered the time when I had made a similar distinction about training and education to my own father, although – I believe – in a less hurtful manner (I never really quarrelled with him). I told Hamlet he was complaining about institutional values – the stud farm – as a way of ignoring the more complex problems associated with intimate relationships, such as with his parents. In rejecting these as institutional, so beneath his notice, he was avoiding their real difficulties. “It’s they who think we’re beneath their notice”, retorted Hamlet.
I began to form a picture of the seriously entrenched nature of Hamlet’s grandiosity – his overpowering need to show off and be admired, to be indeed the prize horse in the stud. Thus, one session, he was full of how he had just been to dinner at Polack’s house, along with some other students, and been the life and soul of the party owing to his satirical impersonations of public figures, which had delighted the Professor. This was recounted in the midst of other social triumphs: the engineering of crushing blows against the establishment, such as getting the college authorities to install a condom machine in the toilet and a photocopying machine for the Junior Common Room, on the grounds of equality of dissemination of information.
My uncle for a start. Anyone can see what a debauched, drunken, degenerate old lecher he is – yet my mother thinks the sun shines out of his arse. But I could tolerate that if it wasn’t for the hypocrisy and vanity of them all. The trouble with adults is, they can’t understand the difference between training and education. The creatures that are mine. They want their children to perform well in their circus – and for whose sake? Certainly not the children’s. Look at me – I haven’t been brought up, I’ve been bred – like a horse on a prize stud farm – groomed in everything from table manners to socialist politics.
