Wending one's way through the Church Dogmatics can be made easier if one learns to recognize the presence of several constantly recurring motifs. Although I will designate each of them as an "ism," they will be entirely subject to the strictures just mentioned. Despite their appearance as "isms," they are not meant to imply that Barth's theology is governed by certain systematic or philosophic principles. The motifs are adjectival in force, not substantive. Being qualifications of the subject matter (never the subject matter itself), they are simply meant to call attention to certain distinctive traits, patterns, or thought forms by which Barth's theology is shaped.

The strengths of von Balthasar's reading seem to be largely independent of his attempt to account for the unity of the Church Dogmatics as a whole. The weaknesses, on the other hand, would seem to be twofold. His account of the unity is neither complex enough to be satisfying nor accurate enough to be convincing in detail. In itself the analogia fidei is not a Denkform (although the actualism which informs it is), and even if it were, it would not be sufficient to describe what unifies Earth's magnum opus.

Yet its concealment, and the fact that we cannot "see" in this concealment, does not alter in the very least the fact that in this concealment (with Christ in God), in which we can know it only by faith, it is really our own life fully and radically renewed on the basis of and in correspondence with true reconciliation accomplished in Him. " Perhaps this point can best be made by drawing a contrast between Earth and Reinhold Niebuhr. Niebuhr exemplifies the kind of theology which thinks in terms of the real and the ideal.
