Nowadays, however, the concept of coping is often used normatively. ’ Some researchers have tried to extract the essence of the coping mechanisms and reformulate it into so-called good advice, which is then offered to the patient. Yet this research rests on a highly debatable premise: The researchers isolate the ‘mechanisms’ from the natural human context in which they function.
Our real challenge when we have symptoms is to see if we can listen to their messages and really hear them and take them to heart’ (Kabat-Zinn, 1990, pp. 280–281). Pain and suffering cannot be controlled or mastered away. But if the individual can get on speaking terms with them, they will have established the first prerequisite for being able to live with them. According to Medard Boss (Boss, 1994), physical pain is always an injury that concerns the individual’s relation to the world as a whole.
Therefore, in humanistic and existential psychology, the biologically oriented concepts of pleasure and pain are expanded to encompass purely psychological and even spiritual experiences; hence the broadened terms of happiness and suffering instead of pleasure and pain. In everyday language, the term ‘happiness’ refers to a state or an experience of well-being and contentment. In some cases, it also points to a state of pleasurable satisfaction. Furthermore, in certain contexts the word ‘happy’ entails the idea of being fortunate.
