It should be noted that the order and speciﬁcation of these key concepts is somewhat arbitrary. Addams herself was leery of classiﬁcation. Categories obliterated connections and the distinctiveness of experience. Categories may aid in making useful distinctions but they can also trap thinking and perhaps progress.
