As Bultmann noted, 'the immediacy of eschatological consciousness' is given emphatic expression in Matt. 28f. ; that Jesus saw in the wide range ofhealings (not just exorcisms) which resulted from his ministry signs of the kingdom's presence. 3). And these were 'signs of God', signs for him of the End - manifestations of salvation, it should be noted, rather than ofjudgment, as the Baptist expected. What is most striking at this point, however, is that the climax of Matt. 102 More important as an indication of the eschatological Now is the proclamation of the good news to the oppressed.

1). To argue in reply that Matt. 5 (particularly on the relation of Prophet to Coming One) that the verse hardly contains. In short, if the Baptist's question is inappropriate in Stuhlmacher's hypothesis, the same holds true of]esus' answer in Hoffmann's. The central problem thus remains: to relate Jesus' answer to the Baptist's question in a satisfactory manner. Several points call for comment. (a) Verse 5, whether an authentic word of]esus or not, cannot be understood except as a reference to actual events in]esus' ministry.

I would suggest that the most plausible life-setting is as follows. The number and variety of sayings preserved here by Mark and Q indicate that Jesus' ministry of exorcism brought forth charges and criticisms against Jesus on more than one occasion. In one case he responded to the criticisms levelled against him by warning his critics of the seriousness of their charge. His power to cast out demons was the Spirit of God. Therefore criticism of his exorcisms was a speaking against God's Spirit.
