The main problem is that, as in a meeting, the decisions are made by those who show up. There are many reasons that people are not able to ‘‘show up,’’ including, predominantly, language barriers (the project was conducted in English) and access to the Internet (often an economic barrier). Unfortunately this naturally resulted in less participation by people in developing countries. These are criticisms that must be taken seriously, especially in a work that explicitly sets out to address problems with inequitable access to information and communication.
We are saying, as Christopher Alexander and the developers of the original pattern language said, that the pattern language consists of hypotheses, and they change over time. At the same time, Alexander uses terms like timeless, and the pattern language book in the latest edition is no different than it was in its original 1977 edition. Part of the story behind this is the fact that the domain of communication and information itself is changing and will continue to change. To some degree, that in itself will force changes in the way we use—and react to, sometimes in opposition—communication and information systems.
This simple question hides a great number of important issues. As we discuss in more detail in later chapters, the evolution from an idea in someone’s mind to a pattern in this published set of patterns (and the online sets as well) has taken several routes. The process has been very open: literally anybody with access to a Web browser can submit a pattern concept to the online system (and anybody without this access could conceivably ask somebody who did have access to post it for them). People can, and have, joined various discussion lists as well or volunteered for the editorial advisory board.
