In the phenomenological perspective we place primacy on the valuing of personal experience, which is elaborated further in Chapter 1. There are also rich and moving accounts within other chapters of individuals' experience of loss and suffering. We need to attend to the immediacy and urgency of this experience, using theory to illuminate our understanding and frame our response. We resist, however, the temptation to neatly categorise such experiences into a normative mould. We respect and draw upon such experience, including that recounted in literature, acknowledging the rights and responsibilities of both clients and helpers.
The cognitive processes are in terms of making sense of the experience. Above all, if we deny grief, we deny the importance of the meaning each of us has struggled to make of life. Loss is painful because we are committed to the significance of our personal experience. (Marris, 1986: 103) What does it mean to be committed to the significance of our personal experience? Before proceeding further with answering this question we must first clarify what we mean by personal experience. As human beings we are experiencing subjects, aware of both the external world around us and an inner world within.
The world we know is a particularly human construction. We may conceive of three realities. One is an external reality capable of stimulating us in simple ways but of which we know nothing other than our interpretations of those stimuli. The second is a reality formed of those interpretations of simple stimulation, an experiential reality representing external reality so persuasively that we seldom realize our inability to verify it. The third is a universe of integrated interpretations, our rational reality.
