While John Wesley remained the publisher of the Methodist hymnbooks throughout his life, Charles was the dominant influence on Methodist hymnody. Charles is reckoned to have written some 9,000 or so hymns, many among the best in the English language. A Collection contained 525 hymns, the vast majority by Charles. John wrote the preface which is very informative. He is not modest in his claims, and posterity has concurred with his judgement since many have found their way into hymnbooks of many churches other than the Methodist.
But the crowds whom Wesley addressed were largely illiterate and uninvolved in worship so he chose the oral medium of preaching. All his preaching began with scripture, the Word of God. Wesley’s intention was to deliver its message, after due research and prayer, in 24 Preaching and Singing the Faith ways that his hearers would find consistent with tradition, reasonable and intelligible. ii) The Creeds of the Church A second source of Wesley’s preaching and of Charles’ hymns is the creeds, the product of the Church’s struggle over many centuries to agree words which say what they believed about God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
