This is not as straightforward a task as it might appear. There is considerable overlap among the techniques, and many of the Peacemakers’ activities do not fall neatly into just one category.

From its first contact with colonialism almost five hundred years ago, El Salvador has been linked to Catholicism. In 1492, Christopher Columbus named the first island he encountered San Salvador, or Blessed Savior, symbolizing the central objectives of the Spanish empire and the Catholic Church, namely conquest, colonization, and conversion. For most Spanish colonialists, conversion to Christianity presumed wholesale adoption of Spanish culture. In practice, however, indigenous peoples were often reluctant converts, subjugated by force under the auspices of evangelization.

One just has to look at the Rev. Dr. William Lowrey, who was in the thick of ending an on-the-ground conflict in the Sudan, and who now works out of the United States to develop educational tools and build regional networks of peace and advocacy.
