It probably had more to do with my efforts to be as intensely receptive as possible to all that was happening and the fact that she did not feel threatened by this when she entered the transitional space that we created between us. It is very important, as it is still clear from the session I have described in more detail, that she could often feel very persecuted by a simple look from me. But if I held my internally quiet and receptive stance, she could enter the transitional experience with me and allow something unexpected to happen.
I hardly ever felt bored or unable to think because of 10 P L AY A N D P O W E R any attacks on thinking that originated in Gail. I felt able to truly listen to her. The “ending” stage of therapy It was very difficult to decide when it would be most appropriate to bring Gail’s therapy to a close. Her parents, Gail and I eventually decided that we should meet until she had had one term in a college which offered courses for youngsters with special educational difficulties. By the time we made this decision, six months before the suggested ending, she was in touch with some more ordinary adolescent needs for independence and told me rather archly that I would have to let her go at some point as she couldn’t carry on coming to see me for ever!
In her new teenage mode, at the age of seventeen, Gail tended to communicate for the whole session without toys or drawing materials. Strikingly, she now often, but not always, came into the room and immediately went to the couch, carefully rearranging the cushions into what I always thought of as “adult” mode before lying down on the couch as an adolescent or adult patient would. It is highly unlikely that she had any knowledge that this was the way adult and late adolescent patients used the couch.
