The alloys studied from a rheological point of view belong essentially to three categories: the model alloys like Sn–Pb with a low melting temperature for which the experiments are relatively easy, the aluminum and magnesium alloys, which are the main thixoformed alloys, and the alloys with a high melting temperature for which only feasibility tests have been carried out. For the characterization of the rheological behavior of these semisolid alloys, two approaches are usually adopted. The first approach is concerned with the semi-liquid state: the alloy contains low fractions of solid so that the behavior is described in terms of an apparent viscosity.
This apparatus has been used for the study of aluminum alloys during solidification at particularly large solid volume fractions . In the following, the results obtained with these viscometers will not be reported since they are mainly concerned with dendritic structures during solidification and transitions in the behavior when the solid fraction increases. Shearing of a semisolid alloy can be produced by parallel plate compression. Although this type of test is better suited for partially remelted billets, it has been employed also with billets transferred from the cooling system to the parallel plate test machine [9, 10].
