The Kenyan economy There is little doubt that the Asian population has been a powerful driving force behind Kenya’s economy (Himbara, 1994). Their success, however, has not been without considerable struggle. The previous chapter chartered the experiences and trends of migration from the Indian sub-continent to Kenya.

The entry considered a lifetime commitment as they had the long-term aim of eventually taking over the business. As previously discussed this affected the education of many secondgeneration Asians who left school before their education was complete. In spite of explicit expectations by family members and constant grooming from a young age a number of these individuals struggled with their own personal desires and the need to fulfil filial obligations: when my brother decided not to join the business it was unheard of then.

Within each community informal structures developed that infiltrated social, economic and religious aspects of the Diaspora.
