Chapter one gives an overview of the emergence of folk religion as an object of study as well as addressing issues relating to the political and ecclesial context of the formation of the field in East and Central Europe. I then go on to discuss the various theoretical standpoints that scholars of religion have taken in relation to the naming of folk religion as a distinct object of enquiry. Finally, I outline the methodological solutions to these issues that were applied in my empirical study of the Gagauz.
