I desire nothing more than to do everything possible (believe it or not if you will) to place it freely and unhindered before all eyes, whether it is beneficial or unbeneficial. For I, more than any other, am the one to do this, because his entire life and being on earth is well known to me. God is my and his witness that I do not lie. I believe the same things that this man taught and I perceive myself to be like him. Namely, that he might honor only his God, to whose praise I also desire to write or speak this.
He was, like a "Renaissance Man," talented and trained in drawing and painting as well as accomplished in song writing and perhaps also in drama. He was from a merchant family and his mother was a member of Delft's upper class. He had received an adequate grammar education, although he apparently retained little of his Latin. His form of writing and thought revealed a penchant for "hidden meanings" and intentional obscurity common among Renaissance Neo-Platonists. This is not to say that Joris was a humanist, for his lack of ability in Latin closed to him the cultural world of the humanist elite.
