G. P. Smith (1992:674). Barr 1999:88. E. E. “marks a major interruption in the continuity of Jewish evolution” (1940:256, 265). Elsewhere, Albright claimed unashamedly that “I am an evolutionist, but only in an organismic, not in a mechanical or amelioristic sense” (1964:141). Albright claimed that his own treatment of Israel’s religious and moral ideas presupposed “the ascending curve of human evolution, a curve which now rises, now falls, now moves in cycles, and now oscillates, but which has always hitherto recovered itself and continued to ascend” (1940:309–10).

More recently, Brueggemann (1997:12–13) has suggested that Wellhausen’s work reflected the spirit of the age, which was strongly influenced by Darwin’s evolutionary schema. Barton (1995:321) contends that Ewald’s History, which purported to trace “the growth of true religion, rising through all stages to perfection” (1869:5), was the kind of “History” Wellhausen tried to refute. Barr maintains that any condemnation of Wellhausen for his uncritical evolutionism is “almost grotesquely misdirected”, and he contends that such attacks are usually launched by those who have “taken little trouble to study his actual works” (1977:147).
