13 At the actual moment of the cessation of individual life, both death and the angel ‘Izrā’īl appear to the one whose soul is to be taken. In fact, in many of the descriptions there is a blurring of identity between the angel and death personified. ” to which the answer is given, “I am (the angel of) death, who makes your children orphans and your wife a widow. . ” No matter which direction the poor afflicted one turns, he sees death confronting him, telling him that his soul will be taken, for his term is up.

Exactly what happens after that the Qur'ān does not say, although the traditions describe the succeeding events elaborately. 3 This distinction is supported by the commentary on the verses mentioning the barzakh, which stress the absolute separation between this world and the realm of the dead. Having passed into that realm, one can never return, either to right past wrongs or to communicate with the living. It is apparent even to the casual reader of the Qur'ān that one of its most consistent emphases is the inerrant judgment of deeds and subsequent reward or punishment to come on the day of resurrection.

He takes out a piece of black paper and spreads it out, saying, Look! 16 The actual process of removal of the spirit/soul from the body has been greatly elaborated in some of the eschatological manuals. Al-Ghazālī, for example, in al-Durra al-fākhira (using both nafs and rūḥ) describes it thus: And when [one's] destiny approaches, that is, his earthly death, then four angels descend to him: the angel who pulls the soul from his right foot, the angel who pulls it from the left foot, the angel who pulls it from his right hand, and the angel who pulls it from his left hand.
