Their keepers, the guards, were supplied with uniforms, reflector sunglasses, whistles, handcuffs, keys, and billy clubs. At first, the prisoners attempted to revolt, directly challenging the guards' authority to impose strict rules and harsh discipline.

In order to do this, such research should address itself to a variety of variables at a number of levels of analysis. Thus, it would by its very nature be integrative and longitudinal, and would allow for the operation of both realistic and unrealistic sources of intergroup conflict in its execution. The use of social simulations to study the process and outcomes of intergroup conflict in these ways becomes especially appealing. Within the laboratory setting, this paradigm would allow for the study of the development and resolution of intergroup conflict in a holistic, systematic, and controlled manner.
