Burroughs felt bogged down by an ‘octopus of bureaucratic socialism’, with the usa in danger of becoming like England: ‘a Socialistic police state’. 9 It is probably this animus towards socialism that underlies the incongruous obscenity of his later comic routine ‘Roosevelt After Inauguration’, Roosevelt and his New Deal being distinctly left-of-centre by American standards. What Burroughs really hated, all his life, was interference. 10 At the time Burroughs was writing this, Wilhelm Reich was being hounded by the Food and Drugs Administration over his beloved orgone box, resulting in his imprisonment by the state bureaucracy and his premature death.
